They Shoot Horses Don't They - Anika Manuel
Artist: Anika Manuel
Title: They Shoot Horses Don't They
Medium: Acrylics on Slate
Size: 32 × 17 × 1 cm
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is the third in a new series of fashion models Anika is depicting on slate. Using magazines as her primary source for the images she's used, this is a collection of stylized women, re-painted onto slate; the cold surface of this medium reflects the coldness and almost deathliness of the women. This particular piece features a model performing a dance routine on the runway, wearing Alexander McQueen.
Working predominantly from photographs and magazines, Anika Manuel's subject matter focuses on people, depicting them sometimes as a form of social commentary, other times presenting them exactly as they are, for the viewer to imbue with their own ideas. Recycling imagery is important to her general concerns, as there already exist so many undervalued images which haven’t yet been fully explored.
